The Need for Smart, High-Performance Transcoding (secure login required)

Abstract

With the recent rapid adoption of HDTV, DVRs, networked media and new video compression standards, a new set of challenges confront designers of set-top boxes, consumer electronics, and PCs:

* how to efficiently store the vast amount of HD data being broadcast.
* how to distribute multiple channels to multiple TVs within the home.
* how to record compressed HD content with adjustable quality and size.
* how to make HD content compatible with other devices such as cell phones.
* how to make H.264 and HD content like AVCHD compatible with DVDs.
* how to make H.264 content compatible with MPEG-2 set-top boxes.
* how to make MPEG-2 content compatible with an H.264 IPTV network.
* how to network HD content for remote viewing or place shifting.
* how to avoid multiple copies of the same content to support different resolutions, bit rates and formats.
* and, how to do all of the above at the same time.

These difficult challenges require an entirely new class of digital media ICs capable of delivering levels of performance far beyond what typical media ICs or processors can deliver. In addition to the traditional functions of decoding and encoding, these ICs must perform a new class of features broadly known as transcoding. This paper details Zenverge's groundbreaking approach to integrating solutions to all of the above in a single, low-cost architecture.
